It’s Home Security Month, Here’s How To Keep Your Home Secure

The clocks will be going back an hour in just over a week’s time as we move ever nearer to the winter season.

Replacement Sash Windows

This means that the nights will be drawing in earlier which will give some burglars extra motivation to scout out vulnerable properties and attempt to break into them.

To forewarn homeowners of the dangers of leaving their abode inadequately protected ahead of winter’s arrival, October is officially National Home Security Month (NHSM).

**HOME SECURITY FACT**

Would you believe that 25% of British householders admit that they have ZERO home security in place? (NHSM research)

You’re asking for trouble if you fail to address security in the home and could be left counting the cost.

So that you don’t become the next victim of theft, take heed of our top 3 home security tips

Replace your old windows and doors

There is a possibility that your current windows and doors aren’t as secure as they used to be because their frames have weakened or the locking systems have become flimsy. This needs to be addressed immediately as windows and doors are obviously a prime target for thieves.

Fitting the latest windows and doors will rectify the issue as they contain advanced locking mechanisms that are hugely difficult to break. A modern window / door frame is also much more robust.

You should check that the windows and doors in any outbuildings (shed, summer house) are still offering sufficient security.

Stop leaving the spare key out!

Hands up! We’re all guilty of leaving a spare key out for another family member under a plant pot in the garden or somewhere else equally conspicuous so that they can get into the house. Doing so is a huge risk though as it could easily be uncovered by a shrewd thief and this won’t go down too well with your home insurance supplier.

Rather than allow thieves to let themselves in without bashing a door down, have spare keys cut for those you trust to look after your home in your absence.

Fit a home alarm

There’s always the temptation to opt for a “dummy” alarm to save your money, but this rarely fools thieves. A working alarm will prove a much better deterrent.

When shopping for a home alarm, you will usually be given the following two options:

  • Bells-only
  • Monitored

A bells-alarm will sound for around 20 minutes when it detects an attack from an external force. Following those 20 minutes it will then continue to flash until it has been turned off.

A monitored alarm works slightly differently. When a break-in attempt is detected you will be notified by the relevant security company. If they cannot get hold of you, they will contact your nominated key holder and / or the Police.
