3 Home Improvement Ideas That Suit Smaller Homes

3 home improvement ideas for smaller homes

It can be frustrating when you don’t have enough space at home, particularly if no amount of decluttering seems to free up sufficient room.

Many people find themselves in this scenario and it’s no great shock when you factor in that new-build homes in the UK have decreased in size by 20% over the last 40 years – a true statistic!

Relocating to a bigger house is the obvious answer, but not everyone can afford to do that.

The next best idea is to try and create the illusion of space internally, which you can do with a few adjustments and home improvements.

We’re thinking along these lines:

Adding mirrors

This is such a simple and effective idea, and the best thing is, it works! You just have to ensure you buy the right type of mirrors and hang them in the right places.

You want big mirrors with small surrounds, not small mirrors, and it’s best to install your mirrors near a window, and not too close to an adjacent wall or ceiling’s edge.

In terms of the height of the mirrors, you want the centre of them to be at the eye-level of an average-sized person.

Changing to a light colour scheme

Make the most of the sunlight that comes into your rooms by reflecting that light with a light colour scheme of some kind.

A brilliant white finish will do this very successfully, but we understand that could be too plain for some people. In which case, you can opt for an off-white instead, a colour with a bit more warmth.

If you decide to repaint your walls with your chosen colour, include the ceiling, trims and doors too.

Fitting bi-folds, French or patio doors

Come the summer months, wouldn’t it be useful if you could open your home and create a connection with the garden? This is possible with a bi-folding, French or patio door.

When your indoor and outdoor settings collide, it will make your interior feel incredibly spacious and provide you with so much freedom.

Anytime they’re open, you will also benefit from the sun pouring into your living space, which as we’ve already mentioned, will make the place deceivingly roomy.
