It’s Energy Saving Week: Our Top Tips For Cheaper Bills

Did you know that today marks the start of ‘Big Energy Saving Week’? Well you do now! To quote the official line, the initiative is designed to ‘highlight positive, practical actions that will help you take control of bills and save energy’.

There are events taking place across the country where homeowners can gain a greater understanding of how to better control energy usage in the home to help save them money.

The escalating cost of household energy over the past few years has found itself right at the top of the political agenda in recent times, with the Labour Party even pledging to freeze energy prices for 20 months if they’re voted into power at the next General Election. Although recent reports have speculated that the idea could be dropped should Ed Miliband be forced to enter into a coalition government.

There is a seemingly endless list of measures you can take to cut the cost of energy, many of which we all too easily forget but should always put into practice, a few of which are listed below:

• Turn off all lights when going to bed or leaving your house empty.
• Pull the plug on appliances or press the ‘off’ switch rather than leaving them on standby.
• Limit the amount of time you spend in the shower and cut down on taking a bath.
• Turn down your thermostat by 1°.
• Wear plenty layers when indoors during the winter months.
• Don’t over boil the kettle, once for each serving is enough.
• Charge your mobile devices at work.
• Put an extra sheet/cover/duvet on the bed.
• Invest in some draught excluders to prevent cold air from passing inside.

If the last bullet point is a prevalent issue at home then you’re far better off buying new windows and doors as a permanent fix.

Planet South Lakes has window and door designs that will massively reduce fuel costs and can offer you a host of other energy saving tips.
