Energy Regulator Encourages Competition For Energy

Companies such as British Gas, Scottish Power and E.ON dominate the energy market, so much so that they are widely considered as being part of a Big Six. It seems that not a week goes by without one or more of them announcing a host of profits which has caused energy regulator Ofgem to urge the Big Six to auction of some of the energy they produce.

Because of the over-riding dominance of the Big Six, smaller companies struggle to get a fair slice of the pie, but Ofgem hope that by auctioning off a quarter of the energy produced by bigger firms will enable the lesser names to better compete.

Ed Davey, the Energy and Climate Change Secretary, has welcomed Ofgem’s advice: “Consumers will get the best deals when suppliers face tough competition and that is what both government and regulator are working to achieve.”

Such a move would only be good news for the country’s homeowners as statistics currently show that there are at least 7 million households currently living in fuel poverty.
