Heritage Windows – What Exactly Are They?

Heritage Windows – What Exactly Are They?

For a window style to be described as ‘heritage’, it needs to be built so that it’s faithful to historical design guidelines and made using long-established crafting methods to ensure that it perfectly matches up with the original architecture of buildings.

The heritage window is a favoured option for window restoration projects at listed properties and homes in conservation areas, particularly late 19th and early 20th century residences because they’re more likely to be accepted by planners than alternative systems.

Planners will only allow historically accurate designs to be fitted into properties of local/regional/national importance so that their original character is not impaired.

Authentic styling with great performance

Creating a believable imitation of a traditional timber window isn’t easy because wooden windows have a charm all of their own and an unmistakable finish, but a heritage window encapsulates their look and greatly eclipses their performance standards.

Whether supplied with a UPVC or aluminium profile, a heritage window can be finished with a convincing wood-effect and will block out draughts, something that a timber window struggles to do.

You can also have heritage windows that are double or triple glazed, which will offer a much higher level of thermal efficiency than any single glazed timber window could ever provide.

Types of heritage window

Planet has two window styles in its collection that are worthy of heritage status, our flush sash window being one of them, recognisable by its perfectly flat finish due to the sash fitting flush into the frame.

Cottage windows are also very heritage in their look and their Georgian bars are much of the reason why, a detailing that gives them a classic cottage aesthetic.

The Georgian bars, with their horizontal or vertical grid pattern, can also cleverly make you believe that the windows consist of small individual panes.

Fast becoming a favourite

Heritage windows are being increasingly requested by customers who approach Planet for replacement windows – we have fitted lots of homes in the area with them and many more locally now radiate a heritage appearance.

They’re not restricted to applications into old cottages and listed buildings either, with heritage windows used frequently for window upgrades at contemporary properties to give them a touch of the old with a mix of the new.
