Why You Should Avoid Buying A Modular Extension

Planet likes to keep up to date with online search trends to uncover what home improvement buyers are looking for and we’ve recently noticed a spike in searches for ‘modular extensions’.

If you’ve never heard of a modular extension before, you certainly won’t be alone as it’s a relatively new concept.

In basic terms, a modular extension is a prefabricated extension, one that is predominantly built in a factory, ahead of being transferred to and installed at a given site.

Due to them being prefabricated, they can be fitted fast. How fast exactly? We’re talking normally within a matter of days.

Because they require less labour than a conventional extension, they’re also cheaper to buy in comparison.

It’s the speed with which a modular extension can be installed, and its low-cost, that makes it so appealing to so many people.

But, if you ask us, we would strongly advise that you don’t get one for your home. Admittedly, that’s a bold statement, but justifiable in our eyes for several reasons.

Design restrictions

While you can customise a modular extension, you’re very much limited to what you can do, whereas with a conservatory or orangery, nearly all options are open.

Second-rate design

There’s not a chance of something that’s built so quickly and so inexpensive ever matching the design quality of an extension that’s been given proper time and attention.

A turn-off for buyers

When selling your home, a modular extension could put people off as a survey will show it to be a non-standard construction, which applies to buildings not made of bricks and mortar, and it can be hard securing a mortgage for properties with a non-standard construction.

Short lifespan

Constructing an extension shouldn’t be a quick job, and when it is, you cannot expect it to last for anywhere close to as long as a conservatory or orangery built at the necessary pace with the finest materials.
