How To Step Up Your Home Security This Winter
Now that it’s getting dark outside much earlier, burglary rates start to increase and there’s a much greater chance of your home coming under threat.
To fight off that threat, you must take home security seriously. Otherwise you could be left counting the cost of doing nothing.
Advice on keeping your home secure can be found on the National Home Security Month website, and October is yet again when this annual initiative is being run.

Fit a burglar alarm
When conducting research on home security we found that only a third of UK homes have a burglar alarm, and that a home in the UK is burgled every 106 seconds. Coincidence? We think not.
The cost of having a burglar alarm fitted (bells-only, silent, dialler, wireless alarm etc.) is small fry compared to what the average cost of a burglary is – £200+ against £3,000.
Once your burglar alarm is in, the chances of your home burgled will be vastly reduced.
For the sake of £200 it makes no sense to get a dummy alarm or no alarm at all.
Avoid leaving a spare key out
Some householders think nothing of putting a spare key under a doormat or plant pot outside – who knows who could be watching them do it?
They will be the first places that a thief looks for a key, ahead of trying some other unscrupulous tactic to get into your private living space.
If you want anyone you know to have a spare key, it’d be much safer to just cut them one and tell them to look after it properly.
Don’t leave keys sat in a lock either so that they can’t be pinched.
Get a more secure set of windows & doors
Your windows and doors have to be capable of standing up to thieves. No matter what they attempt to do, they shouldn’t be able to get past them.
A resilient frame is essential, and a locking mechanism within their design that keeps the frame fixed shut when engaged is equally as important. Glass that is internally glazed will also eliminate the possibility of it being removed from the outside.
Go outside now and give your windows and doors a bit of a push to see if there’s any movement in them. If there is, it’s time you ditched them.
